Resident Parking Permits

It appears that we will get forced in to Resident Parking - by default. It would seem that more and more workers are using Portmore Park Road and the surrounding roads as parking for their days work at the office.

If the County Council impose residents parking, the overall affect will be everyone will have to have it.

My view is that this is bureaucracy to fill the failings of government.

Why do people want to park in residential streets?

It doesn't take a science degree to workout that parking moves to where there is space and where it costs the least.

When you impose parking charges then the overall affect will be:

  • All Car Parks in the reasonable vicinity will have to become charged e.g. the car park by the river at the end of Thames Street.

  • All roads will be used as free parking where possible.

  • Car Parks will remain half used as people will "Park and Walk"

  • If a days parking costs £5 +, what can be done to help the trainee hairdresser on £6 ph - £42 per day before tax and National Insurance, in the High Street premises, park her car for the day?

  • The council won't like the idea of free parking as that is revenue. Guess what ... they don't make a loss on residential parking permits!

An example of one UK council is:

"The cost for the first permit will be £25; if residents have a second car the cost will be a further £50; and for a third car, £100. There are fairly complex rules for providing a limited number of free passes for visitors."

Ah ha I here you say - that is not so bad. Well the Residents Parking Scheme in Elmbridge is a mere £70.
